- According to March of Dimes, “when you smoke during pregnancy, your baby is exposed to dangerous chemicals like nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar. These chemicals can lessen the amount of oxygen that your baby gets. Oxygen is very important for helping your baby grow healthy. Smoking can also damage your baby's lungs.”
- There are several health risks associated with smoking when pregnant. For example, stillbirth, prematurity, low birth weight, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), asthma, and other respiratory problems are all side effects that smoking can have on the fetus (Kids Health, 2013).
- It is very important for a pregnant woman to quit smoking early in her pregnancy to avoid these complications. All of these health issues are avoidable if a pregnant woman takes the right precautions and follows healthy practices during her gestation period.
